On an ongoing basis, your chimney should be checked at least annually, or more often depending on the fuel being used. Official NACS guidelines recommend:

At least once a year if you are burning smokeless fuels.
At least twice a year if you are burning bituminous coal.
At least quarterly if you are burning wood.
At least once a year if you are burning oil or gas.
